Henna has several commercial and traditional uses. However, the most common use for it is as a dye for fingernails, the skin and hair. It is also used for dyeing cloth and leather. Henna, acting as an anti-fugal, is an all-natural hair colouring that permanently dyes hair without damaging it.

In applying henna to your hair, it is advisable to use the body art quality henna rather than those pre-mixed hennas sold in the market, since it is more natural and safer to use, even on synthetically dyed or bleached hair. Having body art quality henna and using it on your hair will result in conditioned, vibrant and healthy-looking hair.

Here are the steps in preparing the henna :-
1. Depending on the length of your hair, obtain 100 to 500 grams of body art quality powdered henna.
2. Place the powder in a plastic container.
3. Instead of using water, mix in with the powder citrus or lemon juice until you come up with a paste similar to a yoghurt consistency.
4. Cover the plastic container and let it sit overnight at room temperature. That way, the dye releases far more effective and long lasting results.

In applying the henna paste to your hair, you need to :-
1. Wash and dry your hair and divide it into layers using a comb. It is recommended your wear an old shirt or drape a towel around your shoulders so as to avoid staining your neck or your shoulders with the dye.
2. Apply the henna on your hair, from the roots to the tips, starting from the nape of the neck. You can also apply it on your gloved hands and apply it thick on your hair.
3. Continue the process in step 2. Remember to entirely cover your hair with the henna, without having dry spots below the top layer.
4. Once you’re done, cover your hair with plastic wrap so that it will keep the dye moist and warm.
5. Wipe henna from your forehead, neck or ears to prevent it from colouring the skin.
6. Leave the henna to settle for at least two to four hours. If you have thicker hair or hair that tends to be resistant to hair colouring, then you should let the dye set in longer.
7. Wash and rinse out the henna from your hair and then shampoo it. It is optional to use conditioner to wash out tiny bits of hair colouring.

Strand testing before putting any dye on your hair is recommended. This can be done by dyeing a few strands of your hair from a brush, or by dyeing a small section at the nape of your neck.
